The Bearder Charity is named after its founder, John Alfred Bearder MBE, TD, MA (Oxon) (1913-1998). He was a Solicitor in Halifax for over 50 years. In that time he either founded or supported many local charities, clubs and associations. He was honoured for this work being awarded the OBE. In 1991 he unexpectedly inherited a substantial sum from a relative. He wanted to put his good fortune to constructive use. He took advice and set about drafting the Trust deed of what became the Bearder Charity. It gave him great pleasure to personally select the first trustees who have continued in that capacity to this day. His Trustees are: Brendan Mowforth, Derek Sharpe, Trevor Simpson, Leyland Smith, Richard Smithies and Peter Townend. John gave the Trustees their guidance. It has been his influence, which gave the Charity its aims and objectives. Above all he wanted it to be flexible and able to respond to need wherever and whenever it arose in Calderdale. The Trustees follow these principles closely and Johns vision. He wanted to have active Trustees, independent minds capable of making quick but valued decisions. The Charity is not burdened with beaurocracy. 99% of its income is spent on worthwhile projects. It is beholden to no one. It is run scrupulously and in accordance with the rules of the Charity Commission. |
